portrait of Leonardo
monalisa1000.jpg
Leonardo was born in 1452 in Florence italy.
leonardo got his start as an artist around 1469, when his father apprenticed him to the fabled workshop of Verocchio. Verocchio's specialty was perspective, which artists had only recently begun to get the hang of. Leonardo quickly mastered its challenges. In fact, Leo quicklysurpassed Vericchio, and by the time he was in his early twenties he was downright famous! Leonardo da vinci was just about the smartest person ever, Leonardo is reported to have been a extremely handsome man he was very fit ( and strong) and he had a fine singing voice. And unlike any other 15th-century Italians, he was a vegetarian and followed strict diet rules. In fact, he loved animals so much that he would often buy caged animals at the market just to set them free.
The Last Supper is one of Leonardo's best-known and worst-preserved pieces. Doomed from the start by Leonardo's experimental technique, the mural began to deteriorate even before the artist's death. Within 50 years it was almost indecipherable, and it was repainted twice during the 18th century. Its suffering continued through the 19th century, first at the hands of Napoleon's soldiers, then from the monks who actually cut a door through the bottom. After miraculously surviving the Allied bombs of World War II, the beleaguered mural's luck began to change. Restorers discovered that much of the original work remained, and it is once again a joy to behold Mona Lisa is actually a self-portrait of Leonardo! X-rays of the painting and close comparison with drawings of Leonardo suggest that this may actually be true!.In the fifteenth century, Italy was not the unified country we know today. At that time it was divided into many small independent states. Naples in the south was ruled by a series of kings. Popes of the Roman Catholic Church ruled the middle section. To the north different families controlled the largest and wealthiest city-states of Florence, Milan, and Venice. They fought wars against each other and against smaller neighboring states to increase their power.

Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267 - 1337). The artist's full name was Giotto di Bondone. He was born about 1267 in the village of Vespignano, near Florence. Giotto’s early talents were recognized by Cimabue, a well-known Florentine painter.Cimabue supposedly saw the 12-year-old boy sketching one of his father's sheep on a flat rock.He was so impressed with his talent that he persuaded Giotto’s father to let Giotto become his pupil. Giotto is generally considered the first in a line of great artists who contributed to the Italian Renaissance. He changed the style of painting at the time by introducing the technique of drawing accurately from life.Giotto lacked the technical knowledge of anatomy and perspective that later painters learned. What he perfected and excelled at painting was a grasp of human emotion and of what was significant in human life. In concentrating on this he created pictures of people under stress, of people caught up in crises and of people celebrating life. The earliest of Giotto's known works is a series of frescoes.Frescoes are paintings on fresh wet plaster. His first frescoes displayed the life of St. Francis in the church at Assisi. In about 1305 and 1306 Giotto painted a series of 38 frescoes in the Arena Chapel in Padua. These frescoes illustrated the lives of Jesus Christ and of the Virgin Mary. Giotto was described as a short and homely man.It is thought that a dwarf, who appears in one of the frescoes at the Church of Santa Croce, is a self portrait of Giotto.Giotto was married and left six children at his death. For nearly thirty years Giotto painted many frescoes in churches all over Italy. He also created mosaics.Nearly all of Giotto woks decorated churches.Unlike many of his fellow artists, he saved his money and was a rich man. Giotto was on familiar terms with the pope, and King Robert of Naples called him a good friend. In 1332 King Robert named him "first court painter" with a yearly pension.Giotto died in January of 1337. -Kren, Emil.
